VFX edit of the movie: Snow White and the Huntsman. The plot follows the original movie about the evil queen seeking to consume Snow White's heart, and the Huntsman switching sides to aid Snow White in retrieving her rightful place on the throne.
The reason why I chose this movie is because I’ve always wanted to try editing a fantasy movie, and this is the perfect time to try. I did not change the plot for my edit, but there are some small differences between the movie and the well-known cartoon, but I think they are negligible so I will not go into detail about it. plot: similar to actual movie. snow white grows up to be the fairest lady and escapes the castle before she could be killed. her evil stepmother, the queen, orders the huntsman to hunt her and come back with her heart for her to consume and be immortal. the huntsman changes his mind when the queens brother spills that the queen cannot bring his dead wife back to life. he sides with snow white and they overcome obstacles like the dark forest, fighting the queen's knights, and the poisonous apple to gather their people and overthrow the queen.
This is the mood board that I curated at the start of the project after I watched the movie. This is the feeling that I want to achieve, however it might not exactly look like this in my edit. I want to create a moody and gothic atmosphere.
The next thing I had to do was to research how short trailers are edited. The points I got were to make the audience expect something, not give them the ending, and there must be conflict. I also thought about the type of music tracks I wanted to find. I needed a slow and hopeful orchestral track for the beginning and a strong and dramatic orchestral track for the second half. I wanted to portray feelings of anticipation which leads to suspense.
Next was to choose the scenes I wanted to include in my trailer. When I watched the movie, I noted down important details and scenes. I then had to decide on the storyline for my trailer. I wanted to include lines from the movie that give a gist of the premise and characters. Using the lines as a baseline, I could choose which scenes matched the lines and thus I could piece the trailer together.
I found all my assets, edited any image I needed, and started work in After Effects. I used what we learned from class: motion tracking, roto brush, camera movements, masking, blending modes, and preset effects. Although I did have some issues along the way, I could fix it and overall it was a fun process.
