National Scoliosis Awareness Month (USA)

Overview: Held every June, this campaign aims to increase public education, early detection, and awareness about scoliosis. It unites patients, families, physicians, and related organizations in various activities and events.

Political

Strengths: Government and institutional support. Secured proclamations from multiple states officially recognizing the month, enhancing legitimacy. NSAM is recognized by the U.S. Congress and backed by organizations like the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and the National Scoliosis Foundation (NSF).

Weaknesses: Lack of policy action. Despite awareness efforts, scoliosis screening policies vary across states, leading to inconsistent early detection efforts. (e.g., Pennsylvania removed mandatory screenings in 2018).

Economic

Strengths: Free and accessible awareness campaigns. Since NSAM is a public awareness initiative, it doesn’t rely on patients' direct payments. Government and nonprofit funding make scoliosis information widely available.

Weaknesses: Lack of funding for advanced research and support. While awareness is widespread, NSAM does not provide direct financial support for scoliosis patients.

Social

Strengths: Broad community engagement. It is supported by hospitals, schools, and patient advocacy groups and reaches millions annually. Famous advocates (e.g., Usain Bolt, Elizabeth Taylor) help raise awareness, reducing stigma.

Weaknesses: Focuses more on awareness, and less on treatment solutions. NSAM spreads information but does not directly promote or provide treatment solutions, unlike private organizations. May not fully reach underrepresented or rural communities.

Techonological

Strengths: Leverages digital platforms and social media. NSAM uses websites, social media, and webinars to educate a global audience.

Weaknesses: Limited Use of Advanced Tech for Early Detection: Unlike private companies, NSAM does not actively develop AI diagnostics or telehealth solutions for scoliosis patients.

Legal

Strengths: Legislative recognition increases credibility. NSAM is officially recognized in the U.S., ensuring its campaigns are endorsed and legitimate.

Weaknesses: No legal requirement for nationwide screening. Many states do not mandate scoliosis screening in schools, leading to delayed diagnosis. Potential challenges in patient privacy when sharing personal stories.

Environmental

Strengths: Encourages physical activity and spine health. NSAM promotes exercise and posture awareness in schools and healthcare settings, benefiting overall health.

Weaknesses: Physical events may have environmental impacts (e.g., waste generation).

Application:

What They Did Well: Leveraged state-level political support and community engagement to raise awareness.

How to Apply: Seek endorsements from local government bodies and organize community-centric events to enhance credibility and reach.

Areas for Improvement: Expand outreach to underserved communities and incorporate advanced technologies for education.

How to Improve: Develop mobile applications or virtual workshops to educate a broader audience and ensure inclusivity.

Scoliosis Awareness Campaign by ScoliSMART

Overview: This campaign emphasizes year-round awareness, providing resources, guidance, and community support for scoliosis understanding and care.

Political

Strengths: Independent from government regulations. As a private organization, ScoliSMART can develop and market its treatments without waiting for government approval.

Weaknesses: Lacks political endorsements that could amplify reach. Since ScoliSMART is not backed by major health organizations like the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) or the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), some medical professionals may view their methods as less credible than traditional treatments.

Economic

Strengths: Profitable and self-sustaining. Since it operates as a business, ScoliSMART has consistent revenue from treatment programs, allowing it to fund its own research and marketing.

Weaknesses:  Expensive for patients and not covered by insurance. ScoliSMART treatments cost thousands of dollars and are not covered by most insurance plans, making them inaccessible to lower-income patients. Traditional braces and surgery, though costly, are often covered by insurance, making them the more financially viable option for many families.

Social

Strengths: Personalized and non-surgical treatment approaches appeal to patients. Many parents prefer non-invasive scoliosis treatments over surgery or bracing. Patients report feeling more in control of their condition with exercise-based solutions.

Weaknesses: Limited Mainstream Medical Acceptance: Since traditional doctors often recommend bracing or surgery, many families are skeptical about trying alternative treatments. ScoliSMART is marketed more like a business than a public health initiative, reducing trust among some medical professionals.

Techonological

Strengths: Uses genetic testing and AI to personalize treatment. ScoliSMART Genetic Testing helps determine risk factors for scoliosis progression, which is not commonly offered by standard clinics.

Weaknesses: Lack of Large-Scale Clinical Trials: While innovative, ScoliSMART’s treatments have not been scientifically proven through large, independent studies, making it harder to gain acceptance in the wider medical community.

Legal

Strengths: Privately owned and less bureaucratic. Unlike hospitals, ScoliSMART does not need government approval to launch new treatments, as long as they stay within chiropractic treatment.

Weaknesses: Not FDA-approved. While ScoliSMART’s exercises are safe, its proprietary programs do not have FDA approval, limiting medical credibility.

Environmental

Strengths: ScoliSMART reduces medical waste compared to bracing and surgery, but its treatment approach still involves physical products like activity suits and genetic test kits.

Weaknesses: ScoliSMART’s clinics are limited to select locations, making it less accessible for many patients.

Application:

What They Did Well: Maintained consistent, year-round engagement with the community.

How to Apply: Ensure that awareness efforts are sustained throughout the year, not just during specific months.

Areas for Improvement: Enhance interactive content and balance educational information with service promotion.

How to Improve: Develop engaging multimedia content and clearly distinguish between educational resources and service offerings.

Although NSAM and ScoliSMART are based in the U.S., their approaches offer valuable insights that can be adapted to the Singaporean context. NSAM’s large-scale public awareness model—through partnerships with schools, hospitals, and social media—can inspire local campaigns involving HPB and MOE, using familiar figures like Nila to educate students. Meanwhile, ScoliSMART’s personalized, non-invasive treatment methods and use of tech tools like AI-based assessments can guide the development of local apps or school-based physiotherapy programs. By combining NSAM’s outreach strategies with ScoliSMART’s innovative care model and localizing them with Singaporean culture, language, and healthcare systems, effective scoliosis awareness and support programs can be created.
